Media statement dated 30 April 2018

In Ayer Hitam, Johor, today the image of Tun Dr. Mahathir on Pakatan Harapan billboard has been forcefully cut by the Election Commission officers. Meanwhile in Kuala Lumpur, the image of Tengku Adnan continues to be featured heavily on billboards, despite the fact that he is neither President nor Deputy President of UMNO.

This unfair ban on images of party leaders other than the president and deputy president of a candidate’s party has been applied selectively on Pakatan Harapan. This is clearly double-standards practiced by the Election Commission in enforcing its new guidelines.

I call upon the Election Commission to respond immediately to this selective enforcement of its new guidelines. The Election Commission is given the mandate to guard our democracy and ensure clean and fair elections, but such biased actions clearly reveal the loyalty of the Election Commission. If Tengku Adnan is allowed to be the face of Barisan Nasional all over Kuala Lumpur, then surely Tun Dr. Mahathir has every right to be the face of Pakatan Harapan. I urge Election Commission to display the same zealousness in cutting out Tengku Adnan’s photo from billboards all over Kuala Lumpur today.
